NORFOLK, Va. (WAVY) – This week, the Norfolk School Board is holding its annual retreat. It’s being held July 7 and 8 and will cover several hot topics.
On Monday, the publicly available agenda says the board would begin by discussing the search for a new superintendent, after the recent and immediate release of former superintendent Sharon I. Byrdsong.
On Tuesday, the board plans to discuss solutions surrounding the school closure proposal and consolidations that could impact at least 10 schools in the Norfolk community.
This will also include the Maury High School comprehensive agreement. NPS has released the proposed plans in this overview.
The retreat was scheduled from 9 a.m. – 3 p.m. both days.
This year’s retreat was not live streamed, unlike the Virginia Beach School Board retreat, which will also hold its annual retreat this week, on July 8 and 9, with livestream and Zoom links available to the public. The Virginia Beach meeting also has public seating available.
The information surrounding the non-broadcasting of meetings was not announced on the NPS Board website or social media pages, even though this is stated on the NPS website:
“On occasion, when special meetings are called or when other times and places for regular meetings become necessary, such changes are publicly announced on the district website and/or in local newspapers. All meetings are open to the public, except for executive sessions, which may be held for discussing items as specified in the Freedom of Information Act (FOIA).“
The NPS Board meetings will be held in two different locations as well. Monday’s meeting will be at the School Administration Building on E. City Hall Ave. in Downtown Norfolk, and Tuesday’s meeting is at Grandy Village Learning Center on Kimball Loop.
