Sentara Health contacting patients after investigation into two employees

NORFOLK, Va. (WAVY) – Sentara Health is alerting patients about a potential risk to their information, after discovering issues with the employment status of two remote workers.

A letter dated June 9, 2025, obtained by 10 On Your Side, explains that an investigation revealed these employees, hired to process lab requisitions, were not working in the United States, and Sentara could not confirm their identities.

Sentara terminated the employees’ access to the company’s systems. Although while employed, these individuals had access to personal patient information, Sentara officials state they are not aware of any instances of fraud or identity theft resulting from the incident at this time.

The incident potentially impacted patients who received lab tests between January and April 10, 2025 and the information employees would have been able to access varied by patient, the letter states.

While Sentara has taken steps to address the situation, the potential risk to patient information remains a concern, highlighting the importance of data security in healthcare.

Sentara Health mailed notification letters to affected patients and offered them free credit monitoring.

Sentara Health also established a call center to answer any questions patients may have. It’s available at 1-877-728-0077, Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Eastern Time.

“Sentara Health takes its responsibility to safeguard personal information seriously and regrets any concern this incident might cause. Sentara Health is committed to taking steps to help prevent something like this from happening again, including evaluating additional platforms for educating staff and reviewing technical controls.”
