NORFOLK, Va. (WAVY) — Following a funeral for a Portsmouth shooting victim, a man was killed and another man was injured after a shooting in the parking lot, Norfolk police said.
Officers received a call in reference to a shooting in the 7200 of Granby Street around 1 p.m. Friday.
When officers arrived, they found a man fighting for life in the Annunciation Greek Orthodox Church parking lot off of Fife Street. The man, who was later identified as 27-year-old Savon L. Majette, was pronounced dead at the scene.
Another man shot arrived by private vehicle to Sentara Norfolk General Hospital.
The gunfire occurred following a funeral at the neighboring Metropolitan Funeral Home, according to a Norfolk Police Department spokesperson. The services were for Amonte Copeland, 26, who was killed in a shooting last Friday on Dunedin Street in Portsmouth.
Police didn’t release any suspect information, including how many potential shooters may be involved. However more than 15 evidence markers dotted the parking lot.
Norfolk Commonwealth’s Attorney Ramin Fatehi was at the scene and said many people witnessed what happened, and said he needs their help to ensure justice can be delivered.
“People need to keep their emotions in check,” Fatehi said. “Whether they’re grieving, whether they’re angry, gunfire’s not the answer.”
This incident remains under investigation.
