NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (WAVY) — A man was arrested in connection with a Newport News homicide in late May.
According to officials, 29-year-old Benjamin Forrest Carter was arrested on Saturday in connection with the fatal shooting of 37-year-old Karen Yvonne Watkins on May 25. Carter was charged with first-degree murder and several weapons offenses.
Officers were dispatched to the intersection of 27th Street and Wickham Avenue on May 25 around 11:20 a.m. to respond to a ShotSpotter activation. Upon arrival to the scene, officers found Watkins suffering from a gunshot wound.
Watkins was then transferred to a hospital where she later died due to her injuries.
Police said Carter was taken into custody without incident.
