NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (WAVY) — A Ring camera and ShotSpotter technology captured the last moments of Karen Yvonne Watkins’ life, as she was shot and killed in the east end of Newport News Sunday night.

Watkins, 37, of Norfolk, was gunned down Sunday night near the intersection of 27th Street and Wickham Avenue. David Nonnulla, who lives near the scene, took precautions to stay out of the line of fire.

“There was a shooting, there were like three shots [and] it was really loud around 11:22 p.m.,” Nonnulla said. “I was hiding in the house. I was looking at my Ring camera to see if I could see anything, but I couldn’t see anything.”

Last summer, on this same block, private cameras caught a police chase that ended when a suspect crashed into a car and toppled a fence. The crash claimed the life of Robert Hill, 61, who was about to retire from Newport News Shipbuilding. Hill’s watch issued an SOS to his family as residents, including Bobby Dupree, watched in horror.

“I was coming out of that building right there,” Dupree said. “I just saw a man lying on the ground. … I didn’t know he was dead. I really didn’t.”

It was a police ShotSpotter device that alerted crews rushing to the scene Sunday night in efforts to save Watkins’ life. She collapsed in front of Nonnulla’s home and was taken to the hospital, where she died. A few years ago, another murder victim died behind his home.

“I think about, like, six years ago, a guy in the apartments behind us was shot and wandered out and died in my backyard,” Nonnulla said. “That was kind of funny. I wasn’t home when that happened, but that stuff just keeps happening around my house. It’s unfortunate stuff like this happens, but everybody’s got guns, so it’s sad. I wish my camera would have seen something so I could have helped.”
