GATES COUNTY, N.C. (WAVY) — Randy Hathaway pleaded guilty to the misdemeanor crime of failing to discharge his duties while acting as the interim sheriff in Gates County.

Hathaway resigned from his duties as sheriff in July — about seven months after he and three of his deputies were indicted and accused of collecting two paychecks at the same time.

Hathaway was charged with obtaining property by false pretenses and failure to discharge duties. The first charge was dismissed, but for the second he was sentenced to 45 days in jail, 100 hours of community service and a $500 fine.

All of Hathaway’s jail time was suspended.
