GATES COUNTY, N.C. (WAVY) — A North Carolina sheriff who is facing criminal charges has resigned.
WAVY’s Jason Marks reports Gates County Sheriff Randy Hathaway tendered his resignation Wednesday, effective immediately.
Hathaway, and three deputies were indicted earlier this year for allegedly collecting two paychecks at the same time.
The North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation said the four employees were paid $100 from the Gates County Public Schools on several occasions to do security work while they were also getting paid for their deputy duties.
Hathaway, who appointed the county’s interim sheriff in September 2016, was charged with obtaining property by false pretense and failure to discharge duties.
