PORTSMOUTH, Va. (WAVY) — Court documents say 47-year-old Andre Johnson was walking home when he crossed High Street at Jamestown Avenue and was hit by a car.

Paramedics found him unconscious and took him to the hospital.  

The driver kept going, but he left a trail of evidence behind that helped investigators piece together the case. 

Police charged 31-year-old Sergio Watson with felony hit-and-run in connection with the incident. 

Paperwork says pieces of the car broke off in the collision and were found at the scene.

Parts like the driver’s side headlight and a portion of the front bumper allowed investigators to determine Johnson was hit by a blue Nissan Altima. 

At the time, police asked the public to call in cars matching that description.

Eight days after the accident, the search warrant says police got a tip from a citizen that the car was parked on Cooper Drive in Portsmouth. 

Police checked it out and say the damage was consistent with the parts left behind. 

Later that evening Watson, who police say is the boyfriend of the car’s owner, confessed to having been the driver. 

The probable cause summary says Watson told police he knew he hit the victim, that he slowed down, and then left because he was scared. 

He also told police that it’d been eating him up. 

Police say he set up a time and place to meet with them, but never showed.

Officials say Johnson is still in the hospital but is making progress. 

Police have also charged Watson with driving under a suspended license. He was arraigned Tuesday morning, and will be back in court April 24.
