CHESAPEAKE, Va. (WAVY) — Candles fought with the wind to stay lit to honor the memory of a mother of two who lost her life in a crash on Interstate 264.

Ebony Taylor, 28, of Portsmouth was with her two daughters and husband on I-264 west Monday morning near the Bowers Hill interchange when her SUV crashed.

Virginia State Police confirmed Wednesday that Taylor was driving when she lost control, overcorrected and hit a guardrail. The SUV overturned several times.

State police said Taylor and her 4-year-old daughter were both ejected from the vehicle following the crash. Taylor was not wearing her seat belt, according to state police, and her daughter was not properly restrained.

Taylor was taken to Maryview Hospital with life-threatening injuries, and later died.

State police said Taylor’s husband was also not wearing a seat belt, and suffered injuries said to be not life-threatening. Their 5-year-old daughter was properly restrained in a booster seat.

Both daughters were taken to the Children’s Hospital of the King’s Daughters where they are expected to make a full recovery. Ebony worked at CHKD according to her sister, Shanikka Ratliff.

“You just like go into shock,” Ratliff said. “She was a jewel, just a beautiful jewel and we all loved her so much.”

The family is currently raising money on a Go Fund Me page for funeral expenses.
