PORTSMOUTH, Va. (WAVY) — Former Portsmouth councilman De’Andre Barnes, 39, appeared in court Monday on a domestic assault charge, but WAVY discovered the dispute between Barnes and his wife Lisa Perry, 37, extends to counter charges and allegations of revenge porn.
Barnes and Perry were at opposite tables Monday morning in Juvenile and Domestic Relations court, where Chief Judge Diane Griffin said that the couple had cross-warrants against each other.
Documents show that Perry filed charges against Barnes of dissemination or sale of the image of another. In an affidavit, Perry claimed that Barnes posted a sexually-explicit video of her on social media, and threatened to publish more images.
Barnes faces a charge of assault on a family member stemming from a Dec. 8 incident at the couple’s home on Boat Street.
Barnes called 911, believing his home was being broken into and robbed. While on the phone, Barnes informed dispatch that it was actually his wife, children and another man.
When police arrived, Perry informed them that she was trying to get some items from the home after Barnes changed the locks. His wife then tried to reenter the home when Barnes blocked her path, allegedly pushing her when she took a step inside.
The report says Barnes pushed her with “great force” in front of the cops and was subsequently arrested and charged.
Barnes filed a counter-charge against Perry for domestic assault. He stated in an affidavit that she came to the home “with men holding guns,” that he feared for his life and that Perry “pinched my stomach without permission.”
The case resumes April 2.
The former councilman narrowly lost his recent bid for reelection in December, and the gap between him and political newcomer William Dodson, Jr. only grew amid a recount requested by Barnes. The final official tally was a 33-vote victory for Dodson.
Barnes was arrested twice on assault accusations, but was only charged in one incident.
