PORTSMOUTH, Va. (WAVY) — Portsmouth Councilman De’Andre Barnes is accused of forcibly pushing his wife into a door at a residence in front of police on Sunday night, according to court documents.

Police were initially responding to the residence on Boat Street for a report of a burglary. Court documents revealed it was actually Barnes who called 911 to report a man with a gun trying to break in.

However, Barnes later realized and informed dispatch that it was his wife, children and another male individual, who’s relationship was not stated in court documents.

The wife told police she was trying to get some items out of the house after Barnes changed the locks. Based on past reports stating that one of Barnes’ children was placed into custody of the mother, it would appear she may have been staying at a different place of residence.

His wife of 17 years still had their home address on her Virginia ID, as well as still received mail to the address. Barnes was informed of steps he needed to take if he wanted to formally evict her or deny her access to the house.

Following this, the wife proceeded to try to enter the home and Barnes reportedly rushed to block her path, according to court documents. After she took her first step into the home, Barnes reportedly pushed her with “great force” in front of the cops, court documents stated.

Previous coverage reported that Barnes was arrested in connection to a domestic-related incident regarding his daughter. Witnesses citing seeing a man dragging a female by the hair.

The juvenile victim told police that she felt her hair being pulled, but she did not think it was intentional. Upon investigation, no charges were filed against Barnes and he was released.

Child Protective Services were notified and the juvenile was placed in the mother’s custody.

WAVY could not find any record of divorce papers filed.
