HAMPTON ROADS, Va. (WAVY) — A winter storm warning will be in effect from Friday evening through Saturday afternoon for most of northeastern North Carolina and eastern and southeastern Virginia, with heavy snow and a light glaze of ice in the forecast in those areas.
The winter storm warning will remain in effect from 7 p.m. Friday through 1 p.m. Saturday with a forecast of two-to-five inches of snow, and ice accumulations of up to one-tenth of an inch. The National Weather Service said mainly snow is expected from about 10 p.m. through about 4 p.m., with a mix to sleet and freezing rain possible after that.
The area covered by the winter storm warning covers the following areas:
- Northampton, Hertford, Gates counties in North Carolina
- Norfolk, Portsmouth, Suffolk and Chesapeake, along with Newport News, Hampton and Poquoson, along with York and James City counties on the Peninsula
- Gloucester and Mathews counties in the Middle Peninsula
- Greensville, Sussex, Surry, Southampton and Isle of Wight counties, and the city of Franklin in the Western Tidewater region
- Northampton and Accomack counties on Virginia’s Eastern Shore
Areas under a winter weather advisory beginning Friday evening include the following:
- Pasquotank, Camden, Currituck, Bertie, Chowan, Dare, Hyde and Perquimans counties, as well as Virginia Beach
Heavy mixed precipitation is possible, with snow accumulations of 1 to 3 inches in the northern part of the advisory area, along with ice accumulations of up to one-tenth of an inch possible. In the advisory area that encompasses localities in North Carolina, they can expect up to a half-inch of snow and ice accumulations of up to one-tenth of an inch.
The National Weather Service has issued expected snowfall amounts throughout the region.

Additionally, A Night’s Welcome program will currently be available at Hampton’s First Baptist Church, 229 N. King St. The shelter is open nightly from 6 p.m. to 7 a.m., and guests must arrive by 9 p.m. to be accommodated.
