SUFFOLK, Va. (WAVY) — While Virginia Department of Transportation crews cleared a lot of snow from the interstates and highways, ice can still form, including black ice, which can be hard to see if the roads look clear.
One of the best ways to avoid skidding on hidden ice is to watch your speed.
As we saw from crashes earlier this week after the snowfall, going fast is especially dangerous.
If your vehicle starts to slip, don’t slam on the brakes. Rather, gradually apply pressure to come to a slow stop.
“Whenever you see water on a roadway, you need to anticipate that is ice,” said Tim Kelley, a senior communications specialist with VDOT’s Hampton Roads District, “which means, certainly driving slow, maintaining your distance between you and other vehicles around you, giving yourself more than enough time to get from where you are to where you want to go.”
VDOT crews are monitoring roads overnight into Saturday for any hotspots that might come up due to black ice or any kinds of icing on the roads, and they say they’ll treat them as needed.
