HAMPTON ROADS, Va. (WAVY) — If you’re trying to imagine a winter in the Hampton Roads area that had more snow than this past one, you’ll have to go back more than a decade to find it.

This winter saw the region get 16.8 inches of snow.

To put that in perspective, in the last 10 winters, Hampton Roads has had more than 10 inches just three times, including this one, and the last winter to have more snow was the winter of 2010-2011, when there was 21.8 inches of snow.

In four of the past 10 winters, Hampton Roads has seen a half-inch of snow or less, and in the two previous years, the region received just trace amounts, according to Super Doppler 10 Chief Meteorologist Jeff Edmondson.

Since 1945, Hampton Roads has had it snow more than 15 inches just seven times, or about once every 10 winters.

The average amount of snow Hampton Roads received from 1991 through 2020 is 6.2 inches.

But it looks like the current forecast has the region firmly entrenched in spring, with trends indicating it’ll be a little bit warmer through the three months of spring — March, April and May.

In the next week, the Hampton Roads region can expect temperatures to be in the upper 50s to upper 60s, with Thursday’s high expected to be in the 70s.
