VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (WAVY) — Dominion Energy crews will begin working around the clock starting Thursday in preparation for Tropical Storm Debby, with wind and rain the biggest obstacles as crews will be prepared to restore power quickly should there be any outages.

“We’re all on normal watch,” said Garrett Neerhof, a Dominion Energy Overhead Apprentice Lineman. “We’ve got night crews a bunch of people coming in and working 24-hour shifts, so we’re always ready,”

That’s exactly the case for this storm, which brings a potential for high winds and heavy rain. The wind could cause downed trees and power lines, while the rain could lead to flooding, which could cause outages to the underground wires and transformers in the area.

“Overhead you can see everything, underground it’s kind of like in the ground,” Neerhof said, “so everyone has got to meet together, get a game plan going and figure out what’s out, find a point to ground, then we figure out where the bad spot is or what actually is bad,”

While Dominion has the necessary tools and crews in place to respond, they could use residents help in knowing where to respond if there’s an outage or flooding in your area.

“If you see any water around a transformer, any wires kind of down call Dominion,” Neerhof said. “Don’t go anywhere near them. Keep your distance a little bit.”
