Within the past year, the Army Corps has taken out much of the oil and infrastructure of an old naval base. It was believed to be decommissioned in the 1980s, but deeper elements of the base were later exposed by erosion. Local officials thought more might be hiding deeper underground.

A day after officials at Virginia Wesleyan University announced the school will change its name effective next July 1, a petition opposing the change is circulating with nearly 2,000 signatures as of Thursday afternoon.
