Within the past year, the Army Corps has taken out much of the oil and infrastructure of an old naval base. It was believed to be decommissioned in the 1980s, but deeper elements of the base were later exposed by erosion. Local officials thought more might be hiding deeper underground.

Residents in the Outer Banks are continuing to prepare for Hurricane Erin.

Three people were rescued from the water just north of the Deep Creek Locks in Chesapeake Wednesday afternoon, according to a Chesapeake Fire official.
