The mandatory evacuation for Ocracoke began at 8 p.m. Sunday for visitors to the island, and it will begin for residents at 6 a.m. Tuesday. The North Carolina Ferry system confirmed Wednesday morning its ferries have carried 2,263 passengers and 1,113 vehicles off the island so far.
