SURRY, Va. (WAVY) – The Jamestown-Scotland Ferry, which crosses the James River between James City County and Surry County, is open after mechanical issues caused service to be temporarily suspended multiple times on Monday.
On Monday, The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) said service was suspended due to unplanned maintenance. By around 4:40 p.m., service had resumed.
Several hours later, around 8:25 p.m., VDOT announced that service was yet again suspended until further notice. According to a Facebook post, crews were working to address mechanical issues.
Just after 10 p.m., VDOT of Hampton Roads posted to X, formerly known as Twitter, saying the ferry has officially resumed full service.
Drivers were advised to use the James River Bridge (Rt 17), the Benjamin Harrison Bridge (Rt 156), or the Monitor-Merrimac Memorial Bridge-Tunnel (I-664) as alternate routes.
The ferry is free and typically operates 365 days a year, even on major holidays.
