(WAVY) — Drivers at the Hampton Roads Bridge Tunnel were anticipating the opening of the new South Trestle Sunday morning, but VDOT said the opening was postponed.
According to VDOT, the plan to open the new bridge connecting the Norfolk shoreline to the South Island Sunday at 5 a.m. was changed just before 3 a.m. During their final preparations for the shift, VDOT said they determined prerequisite work wasn’t complete for the opening.
The team said they prioritize safety and the temporary delay will give the project’s design-build contractor, Hampton Roads Connector Partners, more time to complete the prerequisite work ensuring a safe shift.
Although a new opening date hasn’t been announced, VDOT will share the new date so drivers are aware.
10 On Your Side got a look at the new South Trestle on Saturday morning. Drivers exiting the eastbound tunnel to the Norfolk side of the bridge will be entered onto the new South Trestle. The new portion is taller than what commuters are used to on the old bridge.
“The height of the bridge is anywhere between 12 and 27 feet higher than the existing trestles, about 40 feet above the waterline,” explained Stephen Brich, commissioner of VDOT. “They’re also going to experience some super elevations, which are just degrees of curvature, to help them navigate the bridge along its curves.”
Although the change won’t offer any new lanes to decrease traffic volumes yet, leaders of the project said it’s a milestone towards the soon to be eight lane structure.
Driver’s are asked to continue to move slow through work zones and to obey the speed limit of 55 miles per hour.
“These bridges are still going to be active construction areas,” said Michelle Martin with VDOT. “So please, please slow down. Drive with caution. Put your phones down.”
