NEWPORT NEWS, Va (WAVY) — It was all on a rainy day in Newport News. Sounds like something straight out of a storybook, right? That storybook feat was what Phoebus football was chasing at Todd Stadium. Jeremy Blunt and the Phantoms came into their Sunday matchup with Warwick riding a 51 game winning streak.

If they knocked off the Raiders, they would’ve tied the VHSL record of 52 consecutive wins, a record they previously set in 2011.

Warwick had different ideas.

The Raiders came out and immediately punched the Phantoms in the mouth, taking a 13-0 lead off two first quarter touchdowns from Terius Brown. Phoebus responded before the end of the first with a Maurikus Banks QB Keeper, but Avione Tucker answered right back before the end of the half with a touchdown run of his own. That made it 20-7 at the break.

Warwick’s defense would continue to silence the high-level Phantoms offense we’ve grown accustomed to, and Brown would continue to capitalize on offense. The Raiders would ride Brown’s 200+ yard, three touchdown day and stun the Phantoms 34-20. It’s Phoebus’ first loss since November, 2021, and its first Peninsula District loss in eight years.
