NORFOLK, Va. (WAVY) — Baseball legacy is synonymous with the name “Alou.”

From Felipe to Moises, the Alou family name has racked up World Series Championships, All-Star appearances, and hundreds of memories that resonate in baseball history.

And now, Felipe Alou Jr. is in his first season with the Norfolk Tides, and could’ve never imagined he would live out the legendary Alou name in Hampton Roads.

“To be honest, I was a big Mets fan for whatever reason, so I remember the Mets being here back in the day, but never thought of myself being here,” Alou Jr. said.

After retiring from his playing career in 2003, Alou Jr. went on to manage both the Delmarva Shorebirds and Aberdeen Ironbirds. From having playing aspirations to now managing and coaching up some of the best and brightest of the sport, he’s following a similar pipeline to his dad.

“They did the same stuff that I’m doing, managing the minors,” he said. “My dad and my brother Luis were fortunate to manage in the major leagues, … obviously doing the same stuff that they did.”

“The last three, four years, I’ve been able to handle these different levels,” Alou said. It’s been fun.”
