The Chiefs’ season came crashing down on Sunday as quarterback Patrick Mahomes went down with a knee injury late in the team’s loss to the Chargers, which officially knocked them out of the playoff race.

Trailing the Chargers by three points, Mahomes was attempting to lead the Chiefs on a game-tying field goal or game-winning touchdown when the injury occured. He was helped into the locker room as the Chiefs went on to lose to the Chargers when backup Gardner Minshew threw an interception.

“Don’t know why this had to happen,” Mahomes wrote on X hours after the loss. “And not going to lie it’s hurts. But all we can do now is Trust in God and attack every single day over and over again. Thank you Chiefs kingdom for always supporting me and for everyone who has reached out and sent prayers. I Will be back.”

Mahomes will undergo an MRI on Monday which will determine the severity of the injury and how much time he will be expected to miss. Mahomes has seldom missed time through his career thus far due to injury, but could potentially be out for an extended period. The Chiefs will close out their season with games against the Titans, Broncos and Raiders.

With Mahomes suffering the injury, the Chiefs’ season has officially turned to disaster. The Chiefs entered the year looking to avenge their blowout Super Bowl loss to the Eagles. Instead, the Chiefs have struggled offensively and in one-score games, causing them to start the season 6-8. After making the AFC championship game in every season since Mahomes became the starter and winning three Super Bowls, the Chiefs will now be at home come January while their star quarterback recovers from the injury. It’s simply the worst imaginable scenario for the Chiefs.
