Benjamin Šeško revealed why he chose Manchester United this summer in a sit-down interview with the club after a lengthy summer transfer saga.
The Red Devils signed the Slovenian for an initial fee of €76.5 million (£66.3 million, $89.1 million), with a further €8.5 million in add-ons, as their third marquee addition of the summer joining Bryan Mbeumo and Matheus Cunha. He is the first Slovenian to play for the club.
Šeško was linked in previous windows with a move to Arsenal, though the transfer fell through with the Gunners moving to sign Viktor Gyökeres. Šeško’s Man Utd move accelerated quickly amid a battle with Newcastle United with the Red Devils edging out the Magpies for his signature. The Slovenian revealed why he chose Man Utd in the end ahead of the season beginning.
“I think, first of all, because of the club. It’s just a historical club that is unbelievable. For me, the team is great. It is getting better and better and that’s why also there is just stuff that makes you come there, gives you this energy that you want to be part of. I think it’s a great project, in general, and I can’t wait to start, definitely,” Šeško said in a club interview.
The striker also praised head coach Ruben Amorim for his role in the process.
“Of course, I think this is really important in general in football. [He is] a great guy, great coach,” Šeško said.
Šeško scored 13 goals last season in the Bundesliga adding another eight across the Champions League and DFB-Pokal. The 22-year-old slots in atop Amorim’s 3-4-2-1 system with options supporting him including the aforementioned summer additions plus Bruno Fernandes, Mason Mount and Amad Diallo.
Šeško’s arrival has called into question the futures of Rasmus Højlund and Joshua Zirkzee this summer. The Slovenian, if ready, gets the chance to impress early when Man Utd welcome Arsenal to Old Trafford for both sides’ Premier League opener.
