HAMPTON, Va. (WAVY) — The Peninsula Pilots are back for another season of summer league baseball at War Memorial Stadium.

Standing in first place in the East Division of the Coastal Plain League, the Pilots are one of the crown jewels of the CPL, which features college players using wooden bats.

Coach Hank Morgan scours the country trying to find players to fill his roster and for this year’s version of the Pilots, he likes what he sees.

“It’s a pretty diverse group,” Morgan said. “Some you find under a rock, some are from bigger schools. We’ve got a couple of kids that were in the Division II World Series.”

And there’s also some ringers in the group, especially on the mound.

“We have one or two guys with local connections that were not even playing college baseball this year that are throwing the ball 96-97 mph.”

Kyle Edwards played his college ball at Old Dominion and he’s back for his second go-round with the Pilots.

“We’re just a bunch of guys that love baseball,” Edwards said. “People say summer ball is just summer ball sometimes, but I really do love playing baseball for this organization.”

The Pilots season runs until August.
