NORFOLK, Va. (Norfolk State Athletics) — Norfolk State University Director of Athletics Dr. Melody Webb formally introduced Jermaine Woods as the NSU women’s basketball head coach at a press conference Monday afternoon in front of a room filled with media, friends and partners.
“I’m very excited to be back in the city of Norfolk,” Woods said. “This is a dream job for me and I love this place; it feels amazing to be back home.”
The festivities began with remarks from Norfolk State President Dr. Javaune Adams-Gaston, highlighting the significance of Woods’ arrival to the university.
“I knew he had a proven method of success and a commitment to developing student athletes,” Adams-Gaston said. “But what I love about him is that he’s as interested in developing them off the court as he is on the court, and that is truly important.”
Webb stepped up to the microphone next, welcoming Woods back to the Hampton Roads area and emphasizing the characteristics that made him the perfect candidate.
“Coach Woods brings a wealth of experience and a proven track record of success that aligns perfectly with our vision and future for our team,” Webb said. “As a hometown native, he grew up with deep ties to the university, making him no stranger to Norfolk State.”
Bringing Woods front and center, Webb and Adams-Gaston presented the seventh head coach of the Norfolk State women’s basketball program with a commemorative No. 7 jersey.
Fresh off coaching Team Laney to victory in Sunday’s HBCU All-Star game, Woods addressed his goals and vision for the Norfolk State women’s basketball team, emphasizing his desire to bring more titles to NSU.
“I plan to continue, maintain and elevate the gold standard,” Woods said. “My goal is not to come here and change the foundation, I want to add pieces that can elevate the foundation and win another championship.”
Woods acknowledged the community, administration and leadership for giving him this opportunity.
“First I want to thank Dr. Adams-Gaston and Dr. Webb for believing in me and trusting my vision and aligning it with your vision,” Woods said. “I am grateful for this opportunity, and I don’t take it for granted.”
