RICHMOND, Va. (WAVY) — Four area teams walked away state champions Saturday after earning VHSL gold in their respective sports.
Ocean Lakes baseball captured its first state championship in program history when it knocked off Beach District rival Cox in a 2-1 extra-innings thriller.
“For me, this is for all the guys that came before,” said Ocean Lakes head coach Pete Zell. “… Had some great teams, but nobody has gotten it done. Great for all the guys that came before us, the DeMartinis, the Johnny Walls of the world. Those guys are legendary and feel like getting it for all those guys that came before us, it’s awesome.”
