AUGUSTA, Ga. (WJBF) – One of the many things that sets the Masters apart from other golf tournaments is the absence of cell phones, you can’t have them here. If you want to make a call, you have to go old school.
And you don’t have to go far to find the bank of phones. Just to the left before you get to the first fairway. Free calls to anywhere in the world to talk to anyone you want.
“My mom and my pop pop.”
“My mom.”
“I tried to call my husband. But he has spam set to automatically not answer. So then I called my grandfather because I knew he would answer.”
What a great place for a friendly conversation with those you love.
“My sister to gloat and my stepdad to gloat.”
For some it’s more than a phone call. It’s a chance to use something they haven’t seen in a while.
“25-years will be my high school reunion next year. So 26-years ago.”
“I had a little taste of those phones growing up. We had a landline. Then it quickly went away as I got older.”
“My mom used to have one like this whenever I was really small. But I haven’t used one anytime recently.”
And it turns out it might not be so bad to hang up on the outside world, at least for a little while. There may be some health benefits to it.
“When you get here it’s so relieving not to have to check at work and what’s going on. And everyone knows you’re not here so emails are so much less when you get back. So it’s a really good feeling.”
“Time with the family, time with my friends and wife, just being outside, love it. No phone. Any day you want I’ll do it.”
So go ahead, place that call. And savor the opportunity to put the outside world on hold.
Sadly this day at the Masters for these patrons will soon wrap up and they’ll be back to their devices. Leaving lots of Masters memories to cherish.
