VIRGINIA BEACH, Va (WAVY) — It was a clean sweep for Kellam lacrosse on Monday night, as the Knights boys and girls squads swept Cox on home turf in the Region championship games to capture gold before heading to states.
The Kellam boys were dominant in their 11-4 win. They opened the game up 3-0 and then never really looked back from there. Now, the Knights are back-to-back 5A Region champs, booking their ticket to states, hoping to get over the hump.
“I think they know that to play with grit in the playoffs is so important because every team is going to be gunning for you and it’s a whole new season,” said Kellam boys lacrosse head coach Patrick Aiello. “The boys understood that, we almost perfected it tonight. We had our moments, but we played well.”
And the Kellam girls lacrosse team will head to states for the first time in program history after a 17-13 win over Cox. The star of the day was Knights attacker Ella Snider, who scored six goals in the team’s victory. Now, Kellam is 5A Region champs.
“I think it’s such an outstanding moment for lacrosse for Kellam just because we’ve never been to segionals before and it’s just grown,” Snider said. “… I think it’s a privilege to be able to win regionals with this team.”
State quarterfinal play begins June 6.
