PORTSMOUTH, Va (WAVY) — For the second year, Home is Where the Heart is returned to centerstage at Churchland High School with another twist. Last year, we saw some of the best pro 757 hoopers compete. This year, we got to see the best Hampton Roads based high school hoopers go at it.
The rising stars high school All-Star game featured talent from both sides of the water, including former Princess Anne and now Overtime Elite Guard, Styles Clemmons. Clemmons came back home from traveling the country with OTE to rep the 757 in this event.
“It’s definitely a wear-and-tear on my body, but this is what I wanted. It’s a blessing and a curse, but overall I’m blessed… It’s a blessing to come back home and play in this building in front of all my family and all my friends,” said Clemmons.
In the pro game, we saw faces like former Old Dominion star Frank Hassell who’s playing pro ball in Uruguay. Former Norfolk State star and MEAC Player of the Year Joe Bryant Jr. came by for the second year in a row to compete. He’s won back-to-back MVP awards in his overseas leagues and is currently playing in the Czech Republic.
“I love that the city is pushing for it love that 757 hoops is doing big things like this for the community big shoutout to Diesel it’s all love gonna have some fun,” said Hassell
“Once again shoutout to Diesel with this amazing crowd brings a lot of friendly faces in here just watch some good basketball,” said Bryant
You here that same name every time…. ‘Diesel’
Steven Diesel Whitley created this event to bring high-level 757 hoopers all to one place. As a former player and Assistant Coach at Norfolk State, Whitley has crossed paths with some of the best high school hoopers, all the way up to the current pros. From the event’s first year to now, Whitley says the growth in just one year is more than he could have ever imagined.
“There’s probably more people here in the first quarter of year two than the whole game of year one. It just shows that people support the community. We have talent here, we have something special and should be noticeable to see,” said Whitley.
Next year, Whitley hopes to host a girls All-Star game in year three of Home is Where the Heart is.
