Maury QB Au’Tori Newkirk signs to play for Bill Belichick at North Carolina

NORFOLK, Va. (WAVY) — As National Signing Day hit its stride Wednesday, a lot of eyes in the 757 were on Maury High School as senior quarterback Au’Tori Newkirk highlighted nine of the school’s seniors who signed to play at the collegiate level.

For the past two seasons, Newkirk led the Commodores to an unblemished 30-0 record while hoisting two state championships and earning back-to-back state player of the year honors. The fruits of Newkirk’s labor paid off, as he put pen to paper to go play for Bill Belichick at North Carolina.

“I was starstruck, but then came the realization that he is the greatest coach in the world, but he’s about to be my coach,” Newkirk said. “First time meeting him in person, he told me he wanted me to come play for him. It was a done deal.”

It’s been an illustrious two-year run as the man under center of the Commodores. Listen to this statline:

“When people think of the face of our team, you immediately think of me as the head coach,” said Maury head coach Dyrri McCain, “but the second person you think about when you think of Maury football is Au’Tori Newkirk.”

Said Newkirk: “I just trusted the process and it just came. I pray to God everything was ready and it fell into place for me. [I’m] ready for the next level and ready to go play for Bill Belichick.”
