WASHINGTON, D.C. (Courtesy of Hampton Athletics) (March 8, 2025) … Hampton University men’s basketball team defeated the Northeastern Huskies 70-65. The Pirates were led by George Beale Jr. and Noah Farrakhan tallying 22 points. Coach Ivan Thomas‘s side becomes the sixth ever 10 seed to defeat the seven seed in Coastal Athletic Association Tournament history. While the Pirates were outrebounded in the first half, HU finished the contest tied 34-34 with Northeastern in the rebounding battle.
The Huskies got the board first after Harold Woods scored on a putback layup. Hampton’s offense got going on its first offensive possession with a jumper from Farrakhan. Kyrese Mullen and Beale Jr. provided Hampton with an offensive spark in the opening minutes. Entering the first media timeout, Coach Ivan Thomas‘s squad held onto a slight advantage 11-8.
HU held onto its lead until the 9:53 mark when Northeastern tied it up 16-16. The Huskies on their next offensive possession took the lead for the first time since the opening minute. While Northeastern’s Collin Metcalf had two fouls, the Pirates experienced foul trouble of their own. Mullen, Farrakhan, Beale Jr., and Wayne Bristol Jr. all had two or more fouls in the first frame.
Both teams battled for control until the 4:16 remaining in the first half. Northeastern ended the half on a 12-5 to go up 37-29. The Huskies had success on the glass-grabbing eight offensive rebounds leading to 10 second chance points. Beale Jr. led the Pirates in scoring with 10 points in the first 20 minutes.
Coming out of the half, Farrakhan propelled the Pirates on the offensive end. The Newark, N.J. native, scored HU’s first six points. He would finish the second frame with a total of 18 points. With Farrakhan’s offensive production. Hampton tied the contest 44-44 at the 14:22 mark. The Pirates went on to take a three-point lead with a jumper by George Beale Jr.
While Northeastern regained the advantage before the under-12 media timeout, Hampton was able to take control once again. An 11-4 run by the Pirates helped HU jump out to a six-point lead. From the 7:34 mark on, Hampton led Northeastern.
The Huskies brought the contest back to within one possession multiple times down the stretch. Beale Jr.’s three-pointer with three minutes to go was the Pirate’s last made field goal. Hampton was able to remain within control with stingy defense and making their free throws down the stretch.
