NEWPORT NEWS, Va (WAVY) — The Warwick fanbase is still buzzing after the Raiders knocked off Phoebus for the first time since 2001, while also snapping the Phantoms’ 51-game winning streak.

The team, though, is already far past it.

“We’re moving forward,” said first-year Warwick head coach Thomas Sykes. “We got goals now. We want to finish the year off strong. We want to win the state [championship].”

One of the key contributors to the Raiders’ 34-20 win was junior running back Terius Brown. The workhorse back punched Phoebus in the mouth on the first drive of the game, bursting out of the backfield for the game’s opening touchdown. Brown went on to run for 227 yards and three touchdowns on the day.

“I watched film all week,” Brown said. “I studied their defense, studied their moves, studied what they did.”

He’s the type of contributor coach Sykes says can be a game-changer for the Raiders moving forward.

“Just a kid who you know has got it,” Sykes said. “He’s got the ‘it’ factor.”

Sykes had much more to say about Brown.

“We always said he would be something special,” Sykes said. “We’ve always seen it, and the thing I love about Terius is he was patient. We live in a time in a generation where kids won’t sit and wait their turn. From Cam Glenn to Messiah Delhomme, we had a lot of guys who played his position, and he waited his turn. I’m glad to see the fruits of his labor.”

Brown sits with two Division I offers to Syracuse and Marshall, and said this is a small sample size of what he knows he’s capable of on a much larger scale.

“I’ve been waiting a couple of years to show off my talents and show what I could do,” Brown said.
