CHESAPEAKE, Va. (WAVY) — When it comes to Week 1 performances in the high school football season, Hickory senior Evan White played about as complete of a game as you could have.
In the Hawks’ 23-0 win over Manor, White put up 260 all-purpose yards and two touchdowns as a wide receiver. On the defensive side of the ball, White had two interceptions and six tackles as a defensive back.
“He’s a tremendous player for us,” said Hickory head coach Donnell Brown. “He’s doing all the right things.”
White finished out last season as a primary defensive back, but worked his way into the receiving room during the offseason. His coaches told him that during his senior year, they wanted him to stay on the field for the whole game.
“I feel like I was prepared for it,” White said. “I was ready to be extremely exhausted for every single snap on defense and offense,” said White, who just picked up his first Division I offer from Norfolk State this June.
White and the Hawks started the season out 1-0 after Friday’s win, and think they have the talent to compete with the best of them in a loaded Southeastern District.
“I feel like we have a very, very good team,” White said. “I think we have a high potential to have a 10-0 season if everything goes right for us.”
Up Next: The Hawks take on Western Branch at 7 p.m. Friday.
