YORK COUNTY, Va. (WAVY) — A master deputy with the York-Poquoson Sheriff’s Office helped a woman escape a house fire Satuday afternoon. 

Around 1:30 p.m., emergency dispatchers received the call for the fire. It happened in the Dare area of the county on Weston Road, according to the sheriff’s office Facebook. 

Master Deputy Ben Howlett arrived at the scene within six minutes. The initial radio call said the resident would be outside, but he didn’t see anyone. 

Howlett ran into the home and found the homeowner sitting in her living room. Officials say she was trying to gather belongings, but there were wasn’t enough time. 

The woman was led outside to safety by Howlett. According to the Facebook post, if he hadn’t stepped in, the outcome of the fire could have been tragic. 

Shelly Ward with the York-Poquoson Sheriff’s Office says cooking is what caused this fire. There were no injuries reported and the woman will not be displaced.
