PORTSMOUTH, Va. (WAVY) — A woman died in police custody Thursday night after she suffered a medical emergency. 

Portsmouth police said officers arrested the woman in the 1000 block Frederick Boulevard just after 8:15 p.m. on an outstanding warrant.

Officers took her to police headquarters, where she suffered the medical emergency, police said.

Medics responded to treat her, but later pronounced her dead.

Virginia State Police is investigating the woman’s death at the request of Portmsouth police. State police identified the woman as 28-year-old Carmeita Jane Vangilder, of Yorktown.
