Woman dies following shooting in Cradock area of Portsmouth

PORTSMOUTH, Va. (WAVY) — Family members of a woman shot Wednesday afternoon in a shooting Cushing Street in Portsmouth said she has died.

Anthony Bartell, who said he’s the victim’s husband, said his wife, 39-year-old Jennifer Bartell, was shot at their home.

Bartell said his wife was the nicest person in the world, had no fight in her, and would have turned 40 next month.

Police were called to the scene just before 12:30 p.m.

They have not released any additional information on what led up to the shooting.

Bartell said his family has lived in the Cradock neighborhood for a couple of years and wishes he’d never moved there.

He also told 10 On Your Side that his wife leaves behind six children and two grandchildren, who she was watching at the time of the shooting.

Gabriele Whaley, who was repairing a home nearby, said she heard multiple gunshots.

“I was cleaning up the roof debris and took my wheelbarrow around back because I felt safer,” she said.

Another neighbor, who did not want to identify herself for safety reasons, said the shots sounded like they were being fired from a car.

Others working nearby told 10 On Your Side they saw the victim arguing on the phone earlier in the day.

“We’re going to pray for them regardless of what happened, because in today’s society, no one should be getting shot,” Whaley said.

Police have not released any suspect information.
