YORK COUNTY, Va. (WAVY) — A woman is in custody and charged with first-degree murder, accused of fatally shooting another woman Thursday morning outside a Walmart in York County.

The York-Poquoson Sheriff’s Office said their investigation revealed the shooter and the victim knew each other, and were in a relationship at one point.

The shooting unfolded around 9:35 a.m. at the Tabb area Walmart, and one deputy happened to already be at the scene, according to Sheriff J.D. “Danny” Diggs.

The deputy was able to immediately take the alleged shooter — who deputies identified as 34-year-old Cindy N. Bryant of the 200 block of Hampton — into custody.

The victim — identified as Jean Bryant, 37, of Hampton — was taken to the hospital shortly after medics arrived, but was later pronounced dead at the hospital around 12:30 p.m.

Deputies say the dispute started in the optometry office inside the Walmart where Cindy Bryant allegedly abducted Jean Bryant from her work area. They ended up in the parking lot in front of the store near the main entrance. Deputies say Cindy Bryant then shot Jean Bryant several times in the torso.

Cindy Bryant has been charged with first-degree murder, abduction and two counts of use of a firearm in the commission of a felony, and is being held at Virginia Peninsula Regional Jail.

The Walmart was shutdown and the entrances to the store were blocked while deputies investigated the shooting. The store was later opened only for emergency prescriptions.

Walmart officials said Jean Bryant was not a Walmart employee, but worked at the vision center inside the store, which leases the space from Walmart.

10 On Your Side talked to Mona Burruss, who says she saw it all happen.

“She chased her like an animal. You don’t shoot animals like that. I ain’t never seen nothing like that. I’m 45, I’ve never seen nothing like this in my life,” said Burruss.

She says the suspect ended up turning herself over to the deputy.

“The cop got her, she just dropped the gun like that she was done, she emptied the clip in her, and she was done,” added Burruss.

The sheriff’s office says the investigation is ongoing. Bryant said in court Friday morning she was going to hire her own attorney. She was given no bond in the hearing.
