WILLIAMSBURG, Va. (WAVY) – The Capital Trail is expanding!

The Virginia Capital Trail Foundation (VCTF) made the exciting announcement Thursday that the trail is growing approximately 7.5 miles. The expansion will connect Jamestown High School to South England Street, in the heart of Colonial Williamsburg.

“Expanding the Trail to Williamsburg has long been a priority, and this partnership brings that vision within reach. It not only strengthens our ability to deliver a high-quality trail experience, but also moves us closer to creating a fully connected network linking Richmond to Hampton Roads.”

– Cat Anthony, Executive Director

The expansion is being made possible through a collaboration with the Tidewater Trails Alliance (TTA).

“We are excited to collaborate with VCTF to bring this shared vision to life,” said Reed Nester, Chair of the Tidewater Trails Alliance. “This agreement amplifies our collective efforts and marks the next step toward a safe, accessible, and connected trail system that supports long-term economic vitality across the region.”

The expansion is estimated to cost between $25-$33 million.

The foundation says the partnership has already gained support from the Hampton Roads Planning District Commission and the Hampton Roads Transportation Planning Organization, which will serve as regional advisors and advocacy partners.

James City County is also celebrating the news.

The VCTF was formed in 2004. Ground broke on first 8-mile Charles City County portion of the trail in 2008. Since then, it has grown to a 51.7 mile multi-use, fully-paved trailed that runs through Richmond, Henrico County, Charles City County and James City County.
