LOVINGSTON, Va. (WAVY) – A hiker from Virginia Beach died over the Memorial Day weekend after falling off a walking trail at Crabtree Falls, according to the Nelson County Sheriff’s Office (NCSO).
According to Wintergreen Fire & Rescue, crews were called to the scene around 8:16 p.m. Saturday and found a woman holding onto a rock to avoid being swept away by the water currents.
After navigating down 75 feet of the embankment, NCSO deputies were able to save the woman, later identified as Keturah Hendricks, of Virginia Beach.
An hour later, crews noticed a second woman who fell an additional 150 feet to a lower set of waterfalls. EMS personnel pulled the woman out of the water and got her to an ambulance, but the woman failed to regain consciousness after resuscitation efforts.
The victim, Taniya Flowers of Virginia Beach, was pronounced dead at 12:32 a.m. Sunday. Flowers’ family has been notified.
