PORTSMOUTH, Va. (WAVY) – A program in Virginia aims to help families who have a loved one with Alzheimer’s and other related conditions that could cause someone to wander away from caregivers.
The program, Project Lifesaver, works by equipping loved ones with a monitoring bracelet. By enrolling in the program for $10 a month, local law enforcement will be able to locate and return loved ones who get lost or wander off.
Charles Jenifer enrolled in the Maryland program for his late mother, who suffered from dementia. After she went missing in Charles County, Maryland, they were able to help locate her within just 30 minutes.
“It’s a lifesaver just knowing that that’s support that extra security is like a security blanket for the family, knowing that your loved one is taken care of.” Jenifer said.
Currently, the program is endorsed by the National Sheriff’s Association, the Virginia Sheriff’s Association, Hampton Road’s Alzheimer’s Association, International Society of Crime Prevention, Commonwealth Autism Service and the National Pilot’s Club.
The program is offered throughout the country, including parts of the Hampton Roads region and northeastern North Carolina.
