MATHEWS COUNTY, Va. (WAVY) — A man faces multiple charges in connection to a July 4 incident in the Hallieford area of Mathews County in which someone suffered a number of injuries to their face, nose, torso and extremities, the Mathews County Sheriff’s Office said.

Deputies responded to the incident around 8:30 p.m. and a preliminary investigation revealed the victim tried to call out for help, but Zachary Edward Dehoux, 23, put his hands over the mouth and throat of the victim to keep them from screaming, according to the sheriff’s office.

The victim tried to place multiple phone calls to 911 from an Apple Watch, but Dehoux, who possessed the victim’s phone, repeatedly disconnected the calls, the sheriff’s office said.

Deputies determined this was an ongoing offense that originated in Hallieford and continued to the Cobbs Creek area, keeping the victim from being able to leave.

Mathews County deputies obtained warrants for Dehoux’s arrest, and he has been charged with strangulation, abduction, assault and battery of a household or family member and preventing a person for calling 911 to summon law enforcement. A protective order was also filed.

Dehoux is being held without bond at the Middle Peninsula Regional Security Center.
