Rumble on Tuesday was sonic boom, Navy confirms

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (WAVY) — Tuesday’s rumble felt across Hampton Roads was indeed a sonic boom from a military aircraft.

Navy officials confirmed with WAVY on Wednesday that the boom came from military aircraft operating off the coast of Virginia. The aircraft were conducting routine flight operations, officials said.

People from the Southside up to the Peninsula reported the rumble around 10:30 a.m., with some saying it felt like an earthquake.

This is far from the first time a sonic boom has been felt in Hampton Roads. Nearly a year ago, a NAS Oceana F-18 Super Hornet more than 30 miles off the coast caused a boom that was felt across the area.
