NORFOLK, Va. (WAVY) — 10 On Your Side is learning more about a Sunday morning crash on Northampton Boulevard that sent a 66-year-old man to the hospital with serious injuries.
The crash happened around 10:20 Sunday morning. Norfolk Police say one car heading eastbound collided with another car at a traffic light on Northampton Boulevard.
10 On Your Side learned the driver of the first car is Virginia Beach General District Court Judge Robert Hagans.
It’s not clear what exactly caused the crash. Sources tell 10 On Your Side that Hagans is in a coma.
On Tuesday, the news spread through the Hampton Roads law community.
“He was a very well-liked judge in Virginia Beach, well-known in Hampton Roads,” said attorney Timothy Anderson. “Very humble guy, respectful to the lawyers and litigants. Even when he was punishing people, he did it gracefully and respectfully and it made you, it would be hard-pressed to find anybody to say anything bad about him.”
Another attorney, Kathryn Byler, grew up with Hagans. They both attended Bayside High School. She says he’s an amazing friend and colleague.
“It’s a special person who is a good judge,” said Byler. “You need someone who can be patient and have a calm demeanor, put up with people who are confused and don’t really understand the legal system and that’s Judge Hagans.”
Byler says there’s been an outpouring of love from the courthouse community.
“We’re all praying and extending our best wishes to Robert and the family and hoping for the best,” Byler said.
Norfolk Police say the crash is still under investigation.
