Virginia Beach couple says their 4-year-old was picked up by a buck and thrown

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (WAVY) — The Moorcroft family was in their backyard Tuesday when they saw something out of the ordinary standing right next door looking back at them.

“We looked up and there was a buck standing right over here in our neighbor’s yard,” said mother Allison Moorcroft.

Allison went to get her husband who was in the kitchen to let him get a glimpse too.

“Right about that time I saw him leap over the fence and I started screaming and he booked it over this way where the kids were at the hammock,” Moorcroft said.

She says unfortunately at that same time the buck was heading their way, her son Roman was running to get his dad too.

“I was walking over here and the deer was walking really fast and he got me!” said Roman.

“He put his head down and aimed his antlers right at our son and went in sideways and scooped him up and tossed him to the side and kept running,” Moorcroft said.

Roman was a tough little boy, he got away with just a few scratches.

“Like right here,” he said as he pointed to his lip.

The family says they it wasn’t a small buck either.

They say it all happened so fast they weren’t able to snap a picture of the buck, but will always remember just how lucky they were their son escaped almost unharmed.

“It’s really amazing he walked away with a busted lip and that was it and a really good story,” said Moorcroft.

10 On Your Side did reach out to the Virginia Department of Game and Inland Fisheries, which said encounters like this are usually unheard of, because deer like to run off in the opposite direction.

But they say they will be on the lookout for the deer in that area of Virginia Beach.
