VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (WAVY) — A former economic development director for the city of Virginia Beach has been indicted on embezzlement charges.

62-year-old Warren Harris, a former Virginia Beach Director of Economic Development, was indicted Nov. 18 on 14 felony embezzlement charges dating from the summer of 2016 until the summer of last year.

Reports say the allegations stem from misuse of the city’s funds for “personal use.”

Virginia Beach Communications Director Julie Hill released a statement Monday in response to the allegations:

“While we are limited in what we can say because this is an ongoing case, it is important to note three things. First, when City leadership became aware of potential concerns, they referred the case to the City Auditor who took the necessary actions. Second, in addition to putting in place new leadership of the department, we have instituted a number of policies and procedures to tighten controls citywide. Third, the City intends to pursue legal action to seek repayment.”

Harris turned himself in on November 26 in Virginia Beach and was released on $10,000 bond. He’s scheduled for an attorney appointment hearing on December 2.
