NORFOLK, Va. (WAVY) — Police in Norfolk have made an arrest in connection to the fatal shooting of a teenager Monday night. 

On Tuesday, police announced 20-year-old Naquan M. Alexander, of the 900 block of Wilson Road, was arrested and charged with second-degree murder and use of a firearm in connection to the shooting. 

The shooting happened in the 1300 block of Herbert Collins Way, off East Princess Anne Road just before 8 p.m., police say. 

When officers arrived, they found a 15-year-old boy with multiple gunshot wounds. 

He was taken to Sentara Norfolk General Hospital for treatment, where he died from his injuries. 

Tuesday, the teen’s grandmother identified him as Monti Hughes.

Norfolk Public Schools released this statement Tuesday about the student’s death:

We are very saddened to learn of the death of one of our students.  Norfolk Public Schools offers its sincerest condolences to the family and all who have been affected by this very tragic news.  As an unexpected death impacts everyone differently, supports will be available to students, staff and family members through this extremely challenging time as they work to deal with their grief.

No suspect information is available at this time, but 10 On Your Side has reached out to police to see if Monday’s shooting is connected to last week’s shooting on nearby Cary Avenue. Two 16-year-olds are expected to recover following that shooting, which resulted in the arrest of a 14-year-old boy. 

Police are also investigating a separate shooting in the Chelsea area of the city near the Midtown Tunnel.
