Student charged after marijuana found inside NSU dorm in double shooting investigation

NORFOLK, Va. (WAVY) — 19-year-old Marquise Harris, who police say is a sophomore at Norfolk State University, has been charged with selling marijuana.

Paperwork says he admitted to owning a bookbag and dufflebag filled with multiple bags of suspected marijuana found inside the Spartan Suites residence hall.

But police didn’t target Harris, their investigation started with a double shooting outside those dorms.

Police and medics found two victims who’d been shot back on January 10 around 12:15 a.m. on Corprew Avenue.

A search warrant says they told police they were walking out of Spartan Suites headed to the west side of the building, when suspects ran up behind them with a gun and attempted to rob them.

One got shot in his foot running away, and the other was shot in the shoulder.

Documents say they ran into the lobby, where an employee called 911.

During the investigation, police reviewed surveillance video from Spartan Suites.

That video showed the victims leaving the building before the shooting, but with backpacks on.

Police then say before officials arrived, one victim took both bookbags to a dorm room and went back to the lobby, where medics later took them to the hospital.

Paperwork says while police were investigating different dorm rooms where the victim’s bookbags were allegedly moved, they discovered a bookbag and dufflebag with drugs inside.

That’s when they say Harris claimed to own the bags, and was later charged.

However, officials say they have not yet made any arrests in connection with the double shooting.

10 On Your Side reached out to Norfolk State University, and they declined to comment at this time.

Officials with the Norfolk Police Department say the case is now being handled by the Commonwealth Attorney’s Office.

We also reached out to Harris’ lawyer, but have not heard back.
