Stretch Your Dollar: Free program saves Dominion Energy customers hundreds

ASHBURN, Va. (DC News Now) — Dominion Energy customers in Virginia can have their lightbulbs replaced with energy-efficient bulbs for free, potentially saving hundreds of dollars.

Mike Bradley of ComfEnergy said he serviced hundreds of homes in Northern Virginia over the past four years, replacing up to 45 bulbs for each Dominion Energy customer.

The total value of the replacement bulbs is roughly $100.

Bradley said switching to more energy-efficient bulbs saves customers an average of $100 per year. Over the five to six-year lifespan of the bulbs, customers save $600-$700. He said most people learn about the program through word of mouth.

“Our biggest hurdle is to convince them why it is, we use the term, ‘no cost,'” he said. “When I explain to them that the state has required Dominion to provide this program to reduce energy consumption, then they get it.”

Bradley said the program aims to reduce energy consumption in the state. Contractors participate in the program across the Commonwealth. They’re reimbursed through Dominion Energy.

He said incandescent bulbs require a great deal of heat to make light, using a great deal of energy compared to LED bulbs, which use a small computer chip to generate light.

ComfEngery can replace bulbs in recess lighting, bathrooms, and garages. They also offer LED candelabra bulbs.
