NORFOLK, Va. (WAVY) — Sentara says its employees came together over the past week to help U.S. Coast Guard members and their families.
Sentara Healthcare officials said in a news release thousands of dollars worth of donations will be given out to families in need in Portsmouth and Elizabeth City.

According to Sentara, the U.S. Coast Guard Chief Petty Officers Association was in need of various items including snacks for school lunches, juice boxes, formula, diapers and baby wipes.
Employees collected hundreds of boxes of each item needed, Sentara said.
More than $4,300 in gas and Wal-Mart gift cards, cases of paper products and cleaning supplies were also among the donations — which were were loaded up into trucks Friday morning at Sentara Princess Anne Hospital.

Sentara’s efforts come as the county’s longest ever government shutdown has entered a 35th day.
The Coast Guard is the only branch of the military working without pay during the shutdown. Coast Guard members are set to miss a second paycheck on Monday.
The Associated Press reports setbacks on dueling pieces of legislation that could have ended the shutdown have prompted a burst of bipartisan talks aimed at temporarily halting the closure.
Several businesses, agencies and cities across Hampton Roads have stepped up since the shutdown to help federal workers who have been impacted.
